Plato Part 2- 6th hour

Plato's Allegory of The Cave Part Two
Same as the first, just so we have more then one posting to comment on.... Feel free to switch back and forth between part one and two.
Plato's The Allegory of the Cave" has been used as metaphor throughout time. As you blog in class think about some of the following questions and major ideas listed below. This is a scored blog; however, you will not just be scored on how many times you comment, but the uniqueness, originality, and creativity that you will bring to the discussion. Do not just comment without referencing the text or your peers. Read other comments and make connections to what your other classmates are saying. IT IS OKAY TO DISAGREE just support why. Do not repeat the same ideas that are presented by your peers. Use direct quotes from the reading, make connections and think outside the box. Most importantly have fun, and hope that our first experiment with the laptops goes well.Concepts/ideas to think about
  • What is truth according to Plato?
  • What do the prisoners inside the cave represent?
  • What is outside the cave?
  • What happens to someone that leaves the cave?
  • What determines truth?
  • What happens when one's truth is proven wrong?
  • What is reality?
  • Role of our senses
  • How does this tie into society today?
  • What are our caves?
  • Why did Plato write this?
  • Is it better to stay in the cave then leave the cave?
  • What is perceived of those who leave the cave?
  • What does the cave look like?
  • Can we connect this piece of work to Athenian government? Afterall, this was a chapter in Plato's Republic.

I took the first paragraph to mean that humans are being shown the one and only way to live according to a select few. We're tied down with our heads chained and being shown only what they want us to know...this philosophy is still relevant to today.

I know that we talked about truth on Friday...but what is truth in Plato's view. Is it best for those to see "nothing but the shadows of the images" or to be "not able to see anything at all of what are now called realities" because they've seen the light now?

To respond to Emily's comment...are people not reaching out of their box because they are lazy and don't want to or is it more because we aren't given the option? Our government decides what information we get or not...And so is it really up to us what we have the ability to know? Is it really up to us what truth we know?

So if the truth is fuzzy then what do we believe to be true? What can we count on? Are we untrue? It's such an abstract idea...I'm just having problems comprehending it.

Ya that makes since Emily! Is he criticizing people's preoccupation with the shadows? The false truths? The curtains that change and mask the truths? I wonder how the people of his time took this? Were they outraged? Did anything in their government change? It really is a slam on how the government masks all things.

So then...does anyone know the whole truth? And if they do how do they know it is the truth and does anyone really want to know the whole truth?...Does anyone agree with the saying "Ignorance is bliss?" Aren't there some things that nobody should know at all? And if so, are these things still truths? If they're not known, or only known a little are they still truths? Does that even make sense?

I don't think we can figure out the truth easier because now we have to decide and examine truths from people all around the world...In ancient Greek times they knew one thing and one thing only. I think it's fair to say that now we have more options on what truth is but now we are all becoming more seperate. Because truth is an individual thing and we know have so many options on what our truth is, there is a seperation that is being created in the world maybe a hundred million times over. Is it best to have these options or would it be best to only know one truth? The seemingly right answer would be many options...but what are these options doing to our society and culture?
