"Conspiracy"

After watching the film, Conspiracy, what are your initial reactions to the film. What suprised/shocked/angered you? What did you notice about the manner of the meeting (discussions/food/decorations/agenda/wording)? What topics of discussion surprised you?
  • How did Hitler's dream of Aryan supremacy become a nightmare?
  • How would 15 men decide the fate of 6 million lives?
  • How could these men agree to such an unfathomable decision?
  • What was the point of this meeting?
  • If you were a german citizen at this meeting, how might you have responded?

Remember to comment at least one time in response to the questions stated above. Secondly, you must then comment in regards to someone else's comment. This is a group 3 blog but all are welcome to comment.

Jacy...

I am sorry that the movie to you was "lame". To be honest, I find that comment disturbing- i guess the decision to eliminate an entire population is not worth watching... next time I will try to find something a bit more entertaining.

Do you really think that many of these people were opposed to this meeting or the way in which the meeting was conducted?

Did anyone their really stand up for the Jewish population or were they worried that their power was being taken away? (esp. the creator of the Nuremburg laws)

Antoher point to think about... at what point did the meeting become a reality to them?

Great point Leslie. I think that this movie really does show that it was not just Hitler who in fact carried out the genocide, it was a variety of different people.

Good points!

Levi... your point about the most effective way is well taken. Remember the comment made by the soldier and how he was concerned that shooting 30,000 takes a toll on the mind of the soldier because he has morals.... so instead of shooting them lets find a faster and more effective way to kill them.

Colton... great point about the lawyers.... was this meeting held to make sure the final solution was upheld by the law?

also... did you notice when they reported the numbers that 60,000 a day could be killed by the gas. The men that did not seem at all sympathetic to the discussion (the fat guy) even get uncomfortable when that number is reported.

As vital as the comments have been thus far, don't you think that this movie brings up a greater point? If you look at history, great leaders gain power through love, or fear, FDR and Churchill both provided a common goal for their people to achieve,, the difference between these men and Hitler himself, is not the despicable acts that he commited, and the amazing acts they condoned. The reason for Hitlers evil lies as much in our PROPOGANDA as the hatred towards the Jewish people in Hitler's PROPOGANDA. I am by no means saying that it was acceptable, but this is what they were brainwashed to believe. And was our use of slaves any better? We felt that they were below us and we abused them terribly. And lets take a look at today's society, are we not creating a similar atmosphere, today we are arguing over the rights of foreign people to live in our country, not only that but we are showing the younger generations that it is okay to say "No, you may not live here to create a better life for yourself, We dont want You"

I think that Heydrich knew before this meeting exactly what he had planned to implement in terms of the Jewish question. He basically plowed through anyone who wanted to state an opinion against what he had to say, and he stayed only on a single minded track. It seems that, like stevenc said, the generals knew exactly what they were going to do about the "Jewish Question", and were only trying to make it look as if the entire government had decided upon the final solution. It seems the only thing gained by the meeting was the backing of all the officials at the meeting to implement the Final Solution.
